Manic Mama

Rain is coming down in waves on the weekday I have off with my two year old, Jack.

Its 7.30am and by now he’s “unleashed’’ all his toys into every room of the apartment. The lounge already looks like a post-apocalyptic wasteland.  He’s giving me that baleful – “so what’s next” look, like he’s already reached the point (he’s only been up an hour) where he is as bored as he could ever get, and it’s all my fault! I look out of the window, frantically wishing for the deluge to abate, but it does not.  It’s clear we aren’t staying put, drastic action is required!

Monkey Mania at Fox Studios, is the last bastion of the desperate mother.  We turn up just as the doors are opening, my heart leaps into my mouth as I realise I never packed a pair of compulsory socks.  Luckily I have a friend who is far more organised than I am, and lends me a spare pair.

As soon as Jack’s wearing the obligatory footwear, he’s off.  I try to follow him into the play gym but his plump two and half year old body is far quicker and more agile than mine and I lose him in a maze of inner tubes.  I join the other nervous mothers on the sideline, hovering around the perimeter.  Whenever his head pops into view in the more transparent sections of the structure I yell manically and wave at him, like a demented seal.

Whilst he found my over-zealous salutations around the apparatus comical to start with, after 60 minutes Jack has clearly grown very tired and, let’s be honest here, a little appalled/mortified over his mother’s wild, and rather bizarre behavior.

Eventually he takes pity on me (or just can’t take the embarrassment any longer) and climbs down, so we can check out the other rooms in the complex.  There is a jumping castle and a giant piano keyboard which entertains him for another hour.

A solid hit with Jack, despite my shameful display, and a useful card to play when options are limited!
